THE CHALLENGE OF STEEL PRODUCTION IN UGANDA
8M Construction Digest on 4th August 2018 held a symposium on “The challenge of steel production in Uganda” at the premises of Roofings Group factory at Namanve. The Chief Guest was Hon. Amelia Kyambadde, Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives. Notable in attendance were: Eng. Dr. Badru Kigundu and Eng. Dr. Patrick Rusongoza, both Presidential Advisers on Infrastructure; Eng. Dr. Isaac Mutenyo, a past President of the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) who represented the UIPE Patron, Hon. Hillary Onek and the UIPE President; Eng. Francis Okinyal who represented the Chairman of the Engineers’ Registration Board (ERB); Eng. Steven Kisekka, MD Terrain Plant; Eng. Apollo Buregyeya, a concrete production manager; Dr. John Bahana and Dr. Alice Nabatanzi, both leading scientists; Mr. Shabbir Katib, MD Karibu Ventures, Mr. Charlie Pellegrino (from Australia) and Mr. Charles Musekuura, all leading business people; Eng. Julius Musiimenta and Arch. Herbert Byabagambi, leading engineering and architectural consultants respectively; DEPO MD, Mr. Polling Besigye Kyerere and the management of Roofings Group led by the Business Development Manager, Stuart Mwesigwa, among many.
After inspecting the Roofings’ production premises, members discusses the challenges facing Uganda before the extraction and utilization of iron ore in steel production. The Guest of honour told engineers to spearhead production and industrialization through practice as against theory and government criticism. The message was understood as, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country”, as President John F Kennedy once put it to Americans.
THE ENGINEERS’ FORUM
The Engineers’ Forum will be held at Hotel Africana in Kampala on 25-26 October 2018 under a theme: Sustainable Use of the Nile Waters in The Engineer’s Perspective. Proceedings will focus on the Nile River, its waters, developments aspiration of the riparian countries and the opportunities available to engineers to contribute to sustainable use of the water resources. This will follow the publication of The Engineer- A Journal of the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) which will cover events leading to the forum.
IPPU ANNUAL DINNER
The Institute of Procurement Professionals of UGANDA (IPPU) will have an annual dinner at Hotel Africana Kampala on 16th November, 2018.
MORE NEW REGIONAL OFFICES FOR AUDITOR GENERAL
In another landmark, the Auditor General is scheduled to open newly completed regional offices in Hoima and Moroto in October 2018. Operating under own office premises will further fulfil the Office of the Auditor Generals’ objective to be independent, more efficient and effective.
